Environment

At a time where we cannot ignore the increasing global concern of climate change, organisations worldwide are doing their bit to protect and restore the environment. And the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) is no exception. CAMS recognises the potential effects that motor sport has on the environment and its obligation to manage them effectively. As a result CAMS is committed to applying environmentally-friendly practises to its operation to minimise these effects as much as possible.

This commitment is demonstrated through several initiatives, such as:
• the implementation of the Alternative Energies Committee (AEC);
• the appointment of a CAMS environmental consultant; and the progressive development of an environmental strategy and associated programs.

CAMS has also appointed a designated Environmental Project Manager to oversee these initiatives and ensure that they align with the organisation’s strategic direction; and is represented on the recently convened FIA Environmentally Sustainable Motor Sport Commission.

The Australian Rally Championship has already announced a focus on environmental issues with the introduction of the 2009 Eco Rally Challenge for cars emitting less than a combined average of 150 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, which also comply with the new CAMS Showroom Rally Car regulations.

This year will also see use of Ethanol fuel in the V8 Supercar Championship which, coupled with the Championship’s Carbon Offset Program, further demonstrates a commitment at the top levels of Australian motor sport to provide leadership in proactive environmental programs.

These initiatives follow on from a well-established green culture at CAMS. For many years CAMS has carried out simple yet effective environmental processes, particularly in its offices and throughout its administration.

CAMS staff follow a recycling regime where paper and any items made of plastic, glass and aluminium are recycled. CAMS also ensures that its publications, such as the CAMS magazine and CAMS Manual, are printed on environmentally-friendly paper by an Australian ISO-certified company.

CAMS is committed to maintaining its green approach as well as developing and implementing other important environmental initiatives, with the knowledge that it is all part of the bigger picture. These interactive changes – small or large – can all make a difference, not only for the sustainability of our environment but also for the future of motor sport.
