Fact vs. Fiction
It is not actually compulsory to hold CAMS Photographer Accreditation. Any photographer, regardless of their status, is entitled to apply directly to an event organiser for event-specific photographer accreditation. It therefore follows that the event organiser holds the ultimate decision making power regarding who they allow to attend their event as a photographer, subject to any conditions which may be applicable.
In some cases, the event organiser may insist that photographers hold CAMS Photographer Accreditation as a minimum requirement and CAMS understands that this is totally their decision. However, event organisers are also asked to bear in mind that the CAMS Photographer Accreditation program has never been intended to limit or restrict photographers from plying their trade at motor sport events and servicing their local motor sport community, particularly at the grass-roots levels of the sport (i.e. State and Club level events) where media coverage is often difficult to obtain and where motor sport photographers are encouraged to develop their skills and gain valuable experience.
Venue operators and event organisers/promoters must ensure that all photographers, whether they are CAMS accredited or not, who attend CAMS sanctioned events:
- are given a safety briefing prior to the event identifying the areas where they are and are not permitted to take photos from;
- sign the relevant CAMS disclaimer;
- and are provided with the appropriate identification (ie. credential, vest, etc).
