2009 Australian Off Road Championship recognises Class Champions

Following a recommendation from the Australian Off Road Commission (AORCom), the Board of CAMS has approved the recognition of each class winner in the Australian off Road Championship (AORC) as a Champion.

In recent years there has been a single Class Champion driver and co-driver, the result being determined by a comparison of points earned within each class. In recent years it has been a tight tussle between crews in the ‘old’ Class 1, 3, 7 and 8, with Geoff Pickering and Glen Watson emerging the victors 6 times.

To further recognise the efforts of competitors in the non-outright the Commission felt that it was an appropriate time to introduce a different system, and in 2009 this will be replaced by a champion from each of the off road classes eligible for national competition:

Pro Buggy |Pro-Lite Buggy | Super 1650 Buggy | Sportsman Buggy | Performance 2WD | Extreme 2WD | Production 4WD | Extreme 4WD

“Recently competition in the Pro Class for outright honours has been fierce and the Commission wanted very much to provide incentive for competitors in other classes, and felt the recognition of each class as a champion was the ideal way to do so,” said AORCom Chairman John Paterson.

“Combined with the AORC Tri-Series which was introduced this year, we now have a great package for competitors wanting to compete in the AORC at all levels and classes.”

Scoring for the Class Championships will be similar to the existing methodology, with full details to be published in the 2009 AORC Sporting Regulations which will be published soon.

The Class Championship awards will be presented at CAMS State Awards functions, while the outright and Tri Series awards will be presented at the CAMS National Awards Dinner.
