Breath testing more common at CAMS permitted events

Following the purchase of additional Lion alcolmeter SD400 breath testing units earlier this year, and the subsequent increase in alcohol breath testing at events, CAMS has initiated a review of the current procedure for alcohol breath testing.

The revised procedure will be introduced for 2009 and will be significantly more robust than the current one. One of the accompanying initiatives will be a detailed training and education course which realises a useful qualification for officials interested in becoming a CAMS Accredited Testing Official (CATO). The course will be carried out by a professional in the field of breath testing.

Event Organisers are encouraged to undertake breath testing at their events to demonstrate that motor sport is upholding the expectations of the general community in an area which is critical to the health and safety of motor sport participants.

In order to create a pool of accredited testers, organisers are asked to nominate one of their regular officials to be a CATO and to attend a training course. The courses are planned to be conducted during January. Officials who would like to attend the training sessions, one of which will be held in each state, should contact Andrew.Fisher@cams.com.au by 30 November 2008.
