Motor sport leaders recognise the need to co-operate

Key leaders in Australian motor sport gathered together at the inaugural Motor Sport Leaders Forum on April 30, 2008.

The desired outcome of the workshop was to discuss the possibility of a like-minded group of representative bodies, all focused on developing and fostering excellence in Australian motor sport.

The workshop was the first step in exploring shared services, approaches or systems. It looked at how to approach the development and management of motor sport in Australia in the most constructive, efficient and effective way.

CAMS delegates were joined by representatives from the National Association of Speedway Racing (NASR), Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA), Australian Karting Association (AKA), Motorcycling Australia (MA), Australian Power Boat Association (APBA), Ski Racing Australia (SRA), Australian Water Ski and Wakeboard Federation (AWWF) and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).

At the completion of the workshop there was a strong realisation that all motor sport bodies face the same, very modern, set of challenges – regardless of the discipline they represent.

The consensus amongst participants was that there is power in numbers and that a collective approach is required to establish a unified voice. It was recognised that there is a need to act collectively to guarantee a sustainable future and to ensure motor sport in Australia is as good as it can possibly be.

The immediate benefits of a unified body will be seen through:

• a collaborative approach to developing a cross-discipline environmental policy, and

• the immediate impact on lobbying government collectively.

There will also be medium-term gains that could be achieved, including:

• efficiency gains through sharing certain services and improved bargaining power;

• the potential broadening of the scope of development programs;

• the improved public awareness of our sport; and

• the possibility of a unified member benefits program that offers tangible savings and rewards for members across a range of products or services.

CAMS is looking forward to working with representatives from the ASC, and the other motor sport disciplines to develop the program.
