Therapeutic Use Exemptions

December 12, 2008

The entire Anti-Doping Policy is available on the CAMS website and drivers are encouraged to make themselves familiar with it.

This is very important to any driver or co-driver who will be competing in any National Championship, be it the Gold Star or the Australian Motorkhana Championship, as the majority of testing for 2009 will be concentrated in the National Championship arena.
As discussed elsewhere in the e-Newsletter, 2009 brings with it a new Anti Doping Policy and while most of it will be similar to the current policy, it is important for drivers to be aware that a new policy is on its way.

One of the very positive aspects of the policy is that it provides for drivers who have a medical requirement to use some substances for legitimate therapeutic reasons which may not be normally permitted in sport.

Examples are some diuretic and asthma medications.

Drivers should be aware that they have the ability to have the substances recognised for 'approved therapeutic use', but this can only be approved by a government committee – ASDMAC.

Your doctor will be able to advise you if any medication they have prescribed is prohibited in sport – as all doctors will have access to the appropriate documentation.

Ask your doctor if the medication can be changed to something which is not prohibited. If this is not possible, then you may require a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Be aware however, exemptions are not automatically granted and take at least three weeks to process through the government avenues.

Drivers must apply to ASDMAC for the exemption. The application form is downloadable from the ASDMAC Website.

The approval process is independent and any information submitted is considered private and confidential. Only the final result of the application request is forwarded to ASADA and CAMS. Please be aware that unlike previous years, CAMS is not able to assist with the processing of any exemption.

The application form must be completed by you or your doctor and your doctor will be required to submit results of any tests to confirm a diagnosis. It must then be sent by you to ASDMAC at least three weeks before you intend to compete.

Full details of the application process are available from the ASDMAC Website.
