CAMS School Challenge

2010 CAMS School Challenge - NSW,VIC and WA

After a successful start in 2009, The CAMS School Challenge will be conducted in three states in September 2010, being a separate competition for schools in each state. The School Challenge will commence in Perth, Western Australia on 8th September, then on to country Victoria on the 15th September and finally New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory on the 22nd September.

This exciting program invites high schools and colleges with students in years 10 to 12 to use their team building skills to cover the varying aspects of building the vehicle, competing with it, and carrying out project administration and finance activities required for a successful campaign.

Students are to construct a vehicle within a budget, using a small 1.5hp petrol driven engine. The vehicle will then be used to compete against those from other schools or colleges in driving challenges over a circuit to measure its fuel consumption, manoeuvrability (called ‘motorkhana’), an acceleration and braking test (called ‘go to whoa’), and both exhaust and noise emissions. From these tests will emerge the state winner of the Challenge.

THE COMPETITION

The competition will comprise of:
• A fuel consumption test - using the least amount of fuel over the specified distance being the objective;
• A manoeuvrability test – test of driving quickly through a series of chicanes, called a ‘motorkhana’;
• An acceleration and braking test – the vehicle starts from a standstill, accelerates then brakes to a stop in a ‘garage’, in the shortest possible time;
• Measure of exhaust emission;
• Measure of noise emission.

Each of the above will be rated, with the fuel consumption test the most important, and points allocated according to the placing.

Awards will be made to the team with the best fuel consumption, and to the fastest (with any penalties applied) in each of the manoeuvrability, acceleration and braking tests.
