In an eventful race 28 of the V8 Supercar season, Jamie Whincup has secured his third Championship title.
Changeable conditions ensured that the race was an eventful one, with a number of safety car periods throughout the 74 laps. Mark Winterbottom eventually came out on top with Craig Lowndes and Shane Van Gisbergen filling the second and third spots on the podium.
Lowndes did all he could to try and win the title, winning the first race and qualifying just behind Whincup in the second. After a chaotic start to race 28 of the season that saw much of the field start from pit lane due to last minute tyre changes, Whincup made a slow start and was immediately overtaken by Lowndes. From there Whincup fell back in the field whilst Lowndes continued a strong weekend and went on to finish third.
Despite Lowndes' first and second placings, Whincup did enough to claim his third title on what was a difficult weekend for the now three time V8 Supercar Champion.
"It's been a long year and a long week to be honest. Everyone told me I was going to do this, but it's never done til it's done" said a jubilant and relieved Whincup.
CAMS congratulates Jamie Whincup on winning the 2011 V8 Supercar Championship title.
