Appointed Director (2012–2018)
Ian Gillespie is the Group Chief Executive Officer (since 2006) of the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland Limited (RACQ), a public company limited by guarantee and mutually owned by its 1.3 million members. RACQ is an iconic Queensland organisation that provides an extensive range of products and services to its membership in all parts of the state with annual sales revenue approaching $1 Billion. Its principal activities include the provision of motoring, insurance, travel and finance services as well as being the primary advocate for motorists in Queensland.
Ian is a highly experienced corporate executive with a background in law. His career path has included advisory, functional, and line management roles and has covered a broad range of industries with extensive international experience at general manager and CEO level. He is also a very accomplished company director with over 25 years’ experience on the boards of private, public and listed companies in Australia and internationally.
A CAMS Director since 2012, Ian currently holds the following board positions:
• Director and CEO (since 2010) of Club Insurance Holdings Pty Ltd a Level 2 APRA regulated entity wholly owned by RACQ Ltd and holding company of RACQ Insurance Ltd.
• Director (since 2006), of RACQ Insurance Limited a wholly owned subsidiary of RACQ Ltd and one of the largest personal lines insurers in Queensland.
• Director (since 2011) of the RACQ Foundation, a charitable trust set up by RACQ to provide financial support to Queensland community groups. The Foundation has distributed over $7m since inception in 2011.
• Director (since 2006) of Australian Motoring Services Pty Ltd (AMS), a company wholly owned by the automobile clubs of Australia (NRMA, RACV, RACQ, RAA, RAC, and RACT) that focuses on providing business-to-business automotive and travel & tourism services on behalf of the clubs. AMS is a key player in the wholesale roadside assistance market, an information service provider in the Australian tourism industry, and a provider of consolidated travel solutions, increasing its presence in the online space. Its role also extends to the management of STAR Ratings Australia and the publication of accommodation guides.
• Director (since 2010) of Club Assist Corporation Pty Ltd (CAC), a global logistics company majority owned by the automobile clubs of Australia, supplying automotive batteries, battery testing equipment, automotive glass, alternators, starter motors, and contracted breakdown services to more than 70 automobile clubs worldwide.
• Director (since 2006) of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), a peak industry body which coordinates the lobbying activities of the automobile clubs of Australia and represents their interests both nationally and internationally by influencing public policy on behalf of the automobile clubs and their 7 million members across Australia. The AAA is a member of the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) and the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), which is a federation of more than 160 clubs in 120 countries, representing more than 100 million people.
• Director (since 2009) of the Global Mobility Alliance (GMA), an international coalition of leading automobile clubs from around the world which fosters the exchange of information and explores opportunities for business partnerships on a multinational basis. GMA affiliated automobile clubs collectively represent over 100 million members worldwide.
• Director (since 2012) of Tourism & Events Queensland, a statutory body appointed by the Queensland Government to provide strategic industry leadership and coordinate stakeholders in the planning, development, marketing and application of resources to grow tourism in Queensland. The tourism sector directly contributes over $7 Billion to the Queensland economy annually and is the state’s second largest export earner.
