CAMS recently caught up with the President of Westlakes Automobile Club, Ben Semple, speaking about the car club and their long-time affiliation with CAMS.

How long has Westlakes Automobile Club been established for, and how did it all begin?

Westlakes Automobile Club (WAC) was first formed in October 1965 when a group of three people decided to meet regularly and participate in various motor sport events. Over the years, the club has grown significantly and now has over 200 members, with at least half of those being active competitors in motor sport.

The club resides in Toronto, 30 minutes south of Newcastle and has built a motor sport complex at Awaba, only five minutes away. Awabawac Park contains a three-kilometre Rallysprint course, three one-kilometre Khanacross courses and five Motorkhana paddocks - all on dirt.

What type of events does your club participate in/run?

WAC will playing host to a round of the CAMS NSW Khanacross Series (27 August), the CAMS NSW Motorkhana Championship (5 November) and multiple Rallysprint events. They have been the proving ground for several NSW championship winning drivers in Motorkhana, Khanacross, Rallysprint and Rally arenas.

What makes your club unique?

The club prides itself on providing fantastic value for money at a versatile venue. Investment into a fully automated electronic timing system for Rallysprint and live timing for Motorkhana and Khanacross events have been a welcomed addition for the members.

The club has recently teamed-up with the local Toronto Lions Club and the Toronto’s Men Shed. The combined effort takes a load off of club members and gives back to community via the raised funds. Several members are also active in the Charity Bash scene which includes support for Camp Quality.

What does it mean for you club to be affiliated with CAMS?

The insurance coverage from CAMS allows the club to focus on simply getting together and run their events. Collaboration with nearby and like-minded CAMS-affiliated clubs has also allowed for greater participation at the club’s events.

How can someone become a member of your club?

Whilst based on the western side of Lake Macquarie, members come far and wide to compete from Newcastle and Canberra.

Simply jump onto http://www.wac.org.au/, submit a membership application and come along to one of Westlakes Automobiles Club’s events.
